SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST

REPORTS TO:  Executive Director of Student Services/Building Principal   FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

 

BARGAINING UNIT:  Clarkston Education Association                            

 

SALARY: Per Bargaining Agreement based on education and years of experience

Part I:  QUALIFICATIONS: 
Education:

• M.A. or M.S. Degree in Speech Language Pathology
• Must be eligible for or possess a valid Washington State Educational Staff Associate Certificate and CCC or CFY

Experience:

• Experience with preschool, K-12 students with special needs, desired
• Experience with assistive technology, desired
• Successful experience as a Speech Language Pathologist preferred

• Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, IEPs, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, governmental regulations and professional journals
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
• Evidence of providing for student individual learning styles
• Evidence of training and experience utilizing computer technology for word processing, grading, recording attendance, communicating by e-mail, and implementing these computer programs into daily use in the classroom
• Evidence of motivating and instructing students of all ability levels with emphasis on providing for their individual learning styles-basic levels to extensions beyond basics
• Evidence of maintaining a positive, productive learning climate within the classroom as well as with parents and colleague
• Demonstrate mature behavior and ability to use sound judgment in working with parents, students, staff, and community
• Knowledge of child development
• Ability to maintain appropriate student supervision so that students have a safe and orderly environment in which to learn
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• Ability to perform all duties in accordance with applicable Board policies and District and legal requirements.

Part III:  ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 

• Provides speech and language services in the areas of student assessment, direct therapy, training and consultation for staff, parents, and equipment fabrication or adaptation to enable students to function to their highest possible level within the educational system
• Is part of the District Evaluation/Assessment Team and is responsible for evaluation of new referral students.
• Measures and assesses the speech, language, fluency, hearing, and voice development of children, and interprets the results to appropriate individuals
• Diagnoses speech, language and hearing disabilities, and collaborates in the planning, development and implementation of therapeutic programs
• Assists in identifying and classifying of disabled children and collaborates in the planning of appropriate educational and social placements and programs
• Consults with individual children, families and staff
• Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of all aspects and levels of the school curriculum as it applies to children with disabilities, including the setting of priorities and the writing of specific behavioral goals and objectives
• Participates in Child Find and screening of communication skills
• Participates in continuous assessment of students receiving special education programs and services
• Encourages and initiates research, and helps utilize findings in the solution of school problems
• Makes appropriate referrals to outside agencies, if needed
• Complies with all requirements of WAC's including time lines and appropriate report writing such as report assessments,, IEP’s on IEP Online, and Medicaid billing
• Interprets & follows WAC's as they relate to speech/language students
• Develops and implements an effective communication system with parents/guardians
• Supervision of children on playground and in hallways and/or bus duty when assigned by building principal
• Supervises the services given by the Speech and Language Assistant, if applicable
• Actively participates as a building and district employee at staff meetings, PLC’s and trainings
• Able to design communication boards and other communication devices for students
• Plan and instruct communication labs in preschool setting
• Consult and work with other SLP’s and staff in meeting special education goals and objectives

Part IV:  OTHER DUTIES

• Maintains professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings and other professional activities
• Participates in various student and parent activities which occur in school including PTA, student clubs and after- school activities
• Creates an effective learning environment through student recruitment, dynamic learning opportunities, and student relationships
• Performs other duties as assigned by principal or appropriate administrator
