REPORTS TO: TRANSPORTATION SUPERVISOR

BARGAINING UNIT: IUOE

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve-month, 260-day work year, eight hours per day

SALARY: $20.72-22.32/hour, Benefits as provided by Board Policy

 

Part 1: POSITION SUMMARY:

 

Under the direction of the Transportation Supervisor, perform journey-level mechanical repair and maintenance on district school buses, trucks and other diesel or gas powered mechanical or automotive equipment; maintain, repair or replace various systems and components, including electrical, brakes, transmissions, differentials, steering and cooling systems, assure buses meet Washington State Patrol safety and operation equipment requirements.  

 

 

Part II: Supervision and Controls over the Work:

The employee works with a high level of independence and professional discretion under the general supervision of the Transportation Director. The employee’s work is governed, controlled, and evaluated by acceptable professional practice, school and district policies and regulations, provisions of Washington Administrative Code and Revised Code of Washington, direction of the supervisor, and performance standards and expectations as set forth in district policy.

 

Part III: MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

  • Perform skilled mechanical repair and maintenance on District school buses and other diesel or gas-powered mechanical or automotive equipment to maintain in a safe and proper operating condition.
  • Inspect and diagnose mechanical defects in school buses, trucks, automobiles, backhoes, mowers, tractors and other mechanical equipment.
  • Perform road test to diagnose needed repairs and to test completed repairs; assure buses meet Washington State Patrol inspection requirements.
  • May be required to perform complete overhauls on hydraulic air brake systems; repair and adjust air and hydraulic brakes; design and install high-pressure hoses for hydraulic, power steering, air lines and oil pressure hoses.
  • Tune and repair engines; disassemble motors and repair and replace parts; recondition and adjust ignition and carburetor systems; service and maintain fuel and cooling systems.
  • Align wheels, make body and fender repairs and perform minor sanding and painting of buses as needed; operate wire and gas welding equipment to repair and fabricate metal parts.
  • Repair electrical testing equipment and other hand and power tools; operate a tire changer, wheel balancer, and flywheel surface machine.
  • Replace or repair windows, doors, emergency exits, floors and seats on buses and vehicles.
  • Communicate with vendors to obtain required parts and supplies; drive to vendors and other locations to pick up and deliver parts, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Maintain records or repairs, parts used and names of suppliers; prepare and maintain records of work orders and work performed.
  • Conduct periodical mechanical safety checks on buses as mandated by law.
  • Steam clean engines and transmissions; maintain garage area in a clean, orderly and safe working condition.
  • Respond to emergency road service calls or accidents as requested and perform repairs as needed.
  • Perform lubrication, oil changes, battery maintenance, tire changes and repairs, and servicing of equipment.
  • Assist in coordinating long-range maintenance plans.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relations with other employees, management and the public.
  • Be able to work in a team environment.
  • Assist drivers in maintaining acceptable fluid levels in their buses.
  • Be familiar with bus routes to serve as backup driver.

 

 

JOB REQUIRMENTS

Must have the knowledge of:

 

  • Principles of gasoline and diesel-powered internal combustion engines.
  • Methods, tools, equipment, and materials used in journey-level repair and maintenance of motorized equipment.
  • Air and hydraulic brake systems and components.
  • Operation and use of electrical testing equipment, lathes, milling machines, tire changers, and welding equipment.
  • Health and safety regulations and procedures.
  • Proper lifting techniques.

 

Must have the Essential Skills to:

 

  • Diagnose mechanical difficulties.
  • Operate shop equipment and tools including electronic testing equipment, welders and lathes.
  • Make major and minor repairs to a variety of automatic equipment.
  • Estimate cost of labor and materials for repairs as needed.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Lift heavy objects
  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Perform routine maintenance on all vehicles.
  • Maintain routine records related to work performed.
  • Work cooperatively with others.

 

Part IV: EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

 

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and course work in gas and diesel engine repair
  • Four years as a journeyman automotive mechanic in a bus or truck maintenance facility that services large diesel buses, trucks, tractors and other large equipment;
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

 

  • Clear FBI fingerprinting
  • High school diploma
  • Valid Washington state driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with P1S endorsement
  • School bus drivers endorsement
  • School bus drivers authorization
  • Current DOT physical or the ability to obtain
  • Current first aid card
  • Participate in annual driver’s training courses to meet state requirements
  • Knowledge of safe driving and preventive bus and vehicle maintenance practices
  • Computer skills

 

 

Part VI: PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

 

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

 

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community; ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, or feel objects, tools or controls and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds such as bus parts and chemical containers. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to be able to hear conversations in quiet and noisy environments.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical equipment and large vehicles. The employee may frequently work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, gas fumes and sprays. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and occasionally very loud.
